La seconda giornata dei lavori del Capitolo custodiale è stata vissuta con particolare intensità e partecipazione. Nella Celebrazione Eucaristica, presieduta da p. Marcello Badalamenti, la Parola che ha guidato i Capitolari, tratta da Mt. 9, 32-38, ci ha ricordato la semplicità e l’umiltà dei primi discepoli, che, immediatamente, si lasciano affascinare dalla voce del Maestro e Lo seguono, senza chiedersi cosa sarà di loro, e Gesù, come a voler continuare questo cammino di grazia tra gli uomini, continua ancora oggi a chiamare.
Alla relazione del Padre Custode, ha fatto, poi, seguito quella del Segretario custodiale per la Formazione e gli Studi, il quale, mediante una puntuale esposizione, ha descritto il progetto formativo posto in essere in questo triennio, fino alle prospettive e proposte per il futuro.
Al termine della prima sessione pomeridiana, i Capitolari si sono recati alla Basilica del Getsemani, per una celebrazione penitenziale, presieduta da fra Bruno Varriano.
Il passo evangelico ha condotto i presenti alla meditazione del tradimento di Pietro, ma, prima ancora, ha ricordato come questi, dopo l’arresto di Gesù nell’orto degli ulivi, seguisse il suo maestro da lontano, fino alla casa del sommo sacerdote, contrariamente alle dinamiche della sequela, che, al contrario, è sempre da vicino e non si può separare il destino del discepolo da quello del maestro. La penombra in cui la Basilica è immersa e la timida luce serale, attraverso l’alabastro delle vetrate, ha accentuato il clima di interiorità contemplativa, mentre tutti i presenti intonavano Misericordias Domini in aeternum cantabo. Quindi, l’aspersione dell’acqua benedetta e la preghiera silenziosa hanno lasciato spazio alle confessioni individuali e così, come Pietro, chiamato da Gesù all’apostolato e, dopo la sua caduta ed il suo pentimento, confermato nella guida del collegio apostolico, parimenti, la liturgia penitenziale di quest’oggi, ha voluto porre ognuno di noi sotto lo sguardo misericordioso del Padre, affinché, una volta liberati dal peccato, possiamo tornare a Lui e servirlo con un amore ancora più grande.

It is Jesus who desires to continue this journey of grace with mankind and who, even today, continues to call followers to Himself.
The morning session was opened with the reading of Chapter 1 of the Regula Bullata and with the prayer taken from the Office of the Passion of the Lord, which our Seraphic Father used at the end of his prayer time. Following this the Moderator of the Day, Bro Dobromir Jasztal introduced Bro Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Custos of the Holy Land, who in his turn gave an account of the various entities of the Custody. He began with an general overview and continued with a report on each of the specific places where the Custody carries out its mission and the modalities currently in place.

The Word from the Liturgy was Mt. 9,32-38, which spoke about the simplicity and the unity of the first disciples, who allowed themselves to be drawn by the voice of the Master, leaving everything to follow Him and without even stopping to think about what would become of them. It is Jesus who desires to continue this journey of grace with mankind and who, even today, continues to call followers to Himself.

This was followed by a meticulous presentation given by the Secretary for Formation and Studies of the Custody of the Holy Land, who explained the project of formation that was accomplished in the past three years and proposed a plan for the future.
As a conclusion to the afternoon session, the Chapter Fathers moved to the Basilica of Agony in Gethsemane for a penitential service, presided by Bro Bruno Varriano.
The meditation taken from the Gospel passage was about Peter’s betrayal. After Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter followed Him from a distance to the high priest’s house. His behavior in that moment was completely contrary to what a “follower” normally does (remaining always by his maters side), as the destiny of a disciple cannot be separated from that of the master.
A beautiful atmosphere of interior contemplation was created by the soft evening light of the Basilica that shone through the alabaster window panes, while the assembly chanted together the Misericordias Domini in aeternum cantabo. Following the aspersion of holy water and a time of silent prayer there was the possibility to have individual confession. Just as Peter (who was called by Jesus to be an apostle) fell, repented and was constituted by the apostolic community, today’s penitential service was an opportunity for each one of us to be brought under the merciful gaze of the Father, so that free from sin, we may return to Him and serve Him with greater love.
