CRONACA DELLA GIORNATA DI MARTEDÌ 13 LUGLIO

Il Capitolo custodiale, pur essendo arrivato ai suoi ultimi giorni, presenta ancora un calendario fitto di impegni. La giornata cominciata come di consueto, con la Celebrazione eucaristica presieduta da fra Joseph Costantin, si è svolta attorno tre momenti fondamentali. Nel primo appuntamento, rappresentato dalla visita di Mons. Fouad Twal, Patriarca di Gerusalemme, il presule, dopo aver espresso la gratitudine della Chiesa per la difesa dei Luoghi Santi, ha esposto le necessità della Chiesa locale e le modalità per affrontare i bisogni reali della gente, essendo le nostre terre segnate dai conflitti e dalla sofferenza. Nel pomeriggio, poi, il Nunzio Apostolico, Mons. Antonio Franco, è stato accolto con particolare calore dai Capitolari. Il Rappresentante del Santo Padre ha esortato i presenti a vivere la missione in Terra Santa con slancio e accoglienza spirituale, sia nei confronti della popolazione locale, che dei pellegrini, sottolineando la figura del sacerdote, che è portatore della sua funzione ministeriale, sia a favore della comunità, sia per l’edificazione del Corpo Mistico. Inoltre, continuando nella sua riflessione, Mons. Franco, ha ricordato quanto la storia francescana di Terra Santa sia ricca di testimonianze di esemplare vita religiosa e di martirio. Il terzo momento significativo della giornata è stato segnato dal confronto e dibattito in Aula su vari temi di profilo pratico, relativi alla nostra vita religiosa. Al termine, durante la celebrazione del Vespro solenne nella chiesa di San Salvatore, tutti i Capitolari, unitamente all’intera Fraternità di San Salvatore, si sono stretti intorno a fra Francesco Bravi, Presidente del Capitolo, il quale ha benedetto la nuova Sede della Chiesa, ai piedi dell’antico  ed imponente crocifisso dell’800, copia di un’opera più antica e realizzata nel ‘500. Il tutto per la gioia dei frati, felici di poter godere di questa nuova sistemazione del presbiterio, sul cui altare maggiore, così come per i due altari laterali, custodi della memoria dei tre Misteri celebrati nel S. Cenacolo: la discesa dello Spirito Santo, l’istituzione dell’Eucaristia e l’apparizione ai Discepoli, furono trasferite le indulgenze che i pellegrini ottenevano al Santo Cenacolo e che poi, dopo l’espulsione dei francescani, nel XVI secolo, furono trasferite, con autorizzazione papale sugli altari della nostra amata Chiesa. Il progetto è stato realizzato grazie alla perizia ed al raffinato gusto estetico di uno degli artisti del seminario francescano internazionale, fra Antonino Milazzo.

Report of the ninth day of the Chapter: Tuesday 13th of July

Although the Chapter is swiftly drawing to its conclusion, the schedule remains intense and dynamic. The day began as usual, with the celebration of the Eucharistic presided by Fr. Joseph Costantin. The first appointment was the visit of Archbishop Fouad Twal, Patriarch of Jerusalem. The Archbishop began by expressing the Church’s gratitude for the Franciscan custody of the Holy Places. He addressed the needs of the local Church and spoke about how we can meet these needs in a land that is scarred by conflict and suffering.

The Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Antonio Franco came in the afternoon and received an especially warm welcome. The Pope’s representative urged those present to live their mission in the Holy Land with spiritual enthusiasm and hospitality, both towards the local population and towards the pilgrims. He stressed the importance of the figure of the priest, who is the bearer of his ministerial function, both for the community and for the edification of the Mystical Body of Christ. Archbishop Franco also recalled the many witnesses of exemplary religious life and martyrdom in the history of the Franciscan community in the Holy Land.

The third important moment of the day was marked by animated discussion and debate regarding some practical issues for our religious life. At the end of the day, the Chapter Fathers, together with the community of St. Savior’s Monastery gathered around Bro. Francesco Bravo, president of the Chapter, for the solemn celebration of Vespers in the church of St. Savior’s. Bro. Bravi blessed the area around the major altar, at the foot of the impressive crucifix. The present crucifix is a 19^th century copy of the original one (built in the 16^th century). The major altar, together with the two side altars preserve the memory of the three mysteries celebrated in the Cenacle: the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the institution of the Eucharist and the apparition to the disciples. Following the expulsion from the Cenacle in the 16^th century, the Pope gave authorization for the pilgrim indulgences to be transferred to these very altars. The project was realized thanks to the expertise and refined taste of one of the students of the international Franciscan seminary, Bro. Antonio Milazzo.
