E' iniziato....Cronaca della giornata del 4 luglio

Un fresco pomeriggio domenicale ha visto riuniti i Padri capitolari provenienti dai vari paesi del mondo, in cui la Custodia di Terra Santa è presente con i suoi conventi: quarantacinque frati, in rappresentanza di tutti i confratelli della Custodia, vivranno quest’esperienza di preghiera, condivisione e ricerca spirituale. Una liturgia introduttiva al Capitolo custodiale si è svolta nella cornice del suggestivo santuario del Dominus Flevit, cosicché, dalla terrazza antistante la piccola chiesa, in un unico abbraccio ideale, lo sguardo dei presenti ha potuto spaziare dalla Basilica della Resurrezione, al Monte dello Scandalo, passando attraverso il luogo dell’antico Tempio, dal Monte Sion, al campanile dell’orologio del convento francescano di San Salvatore, che rappresenta uno degli elementi caratterizzanti lo skyline della Gerusalemme antica.

Nella monizione iniziale è stato evidenziato come la Provvidenza abbia voluto, che a questi Luoghi Santi, fosse legata la presenza dei francescani e come, lungo otto secoli, generazioni di fratelli, abbiano consegnato la loro vita nel dono prezioso della custodia di questi Luoghi, nella semplicità e nel silenzio, conformemente al dettato del cap. XVI della Regola non Bollata, che, all’indirizzo dei frati che si recano nella Provincia d’Oltremare (come era chiamata in passato la Provincia francescana della Custodia di Terra Santa), recita: siano soggetti ad ogni creatura umana per amore di Dio, confessando di essere cristiani.

Nell’omelia il Presidente del Capitolo, fra Francesco Bravi, ha invitato i capitolari a meditare sull’imperativo forte e deciso della testimonianza. Imperativo ed invito, al contempo, di essere testimoni di Cristo, il quale incarna il senso profondo del nostro vivere, donde, lo sguardo contemplativo sulla Città Santa, quale sguardo fisso sulla persona di Cristo, che qui ha consumato il mistero pasquale.  Gerusalemme, luogo santo, che può divenire luogo dell’anima, se lasciamo che il Risorto plasmi e trasformi ognuno di noi, mostrandoci con occhi nuovi i nostri fratelli.

La celebrazione liturgica è stata animata dai gioiosi canti in lingua italiana e spagnola, curati dagli studenti del seminario internazionale della Custodia.  Infine, nella tranquillità  vespertina, i padri capitolari hanno consumato un semplice pasto fraterno a base di cibi mediorientali, mentre il sole, declinando all’orizzonte, arrossava le antiche e bianche mura di Solimano e, in lontananza, la voce del muezzin invitava i fedeli musulmani alla preghiera.

Report of the first day of the Chapter: Sunday 4th of July

The Chapter Fathers gathered together on a cool Sunday afternoon marking the beginning of period of prayer, sharing and spiritual examination. They have come from various countries where the Custody of the Holy Land has a monastery: forty-five friars, representing all of the brothers belonging to the Custody. The opening liturgy of the Custody Chapter began in the beautiful setting of the sanctuary of Dominus Flevit. From the terrace in front of the small church with just a glace those present contemplated the magnificent view from Church of the Holy Sepulchre, to the Mount of Offence passing through the area of the ancient Temple, from Mount Zion to the splendid steeple of the Franciscan Monastery of St Saviors, representing one of the characterizing elements of the ancient Jerusalem skyline.

In the opening exhortation the emphasis was put on how Providence decided that these Holy Places be connected to the Franciscan presence and how, for the past eight centuries, generations of friars, gave their life as a precious gift to safe-guarding these Places. They lived in simplicity and silence, conforming to what was laid down in chapter 16 of the Regula non-Bullata which addressed those friars who went to the Overseas Provinces (the former name of the Custody of the Holy Land): be subject "to every human creature for God's sake" (1 Pt 2:13) and confess themselves to be Christians.

In his homily Fra Francesco Bravi, the Chapter President, invited the Chapter members to meditate on the strong and decisive imperative to give witness. At the same time both imperative and invitation to be witnesses of Christ, that embodies the profound sense of our life and from where our contemplation of the Holy City, is our gaze fixed on the person of Christ who, here in this place, consummated the Easter mystery. The holy place of Jerusalem can become the place of the soul, if we permit that the Resurrected One mould and form each one of us, giving us new eyes with which to look upon our brothers.

The students of the international seminary of the Custody animated the liturgical celebration with joyful songs in Italian and Spanish. In the calm of the evening, with the voice of the muezzin in the distance calling the faithful to prayer and as the sun set and reddened the white city walls built by Suleiman, the Chapter friars shared together a simple fraternal meal of middle-eastern food.
