CRONACA DELLA GIORNATA DI GIOVEDÌ 15 LUGLIO

Il Capitolo è giunto al termine. Questa mattina l’intera Assise capitolare si è riunita dinanzi l’edicola del Santo Sepolcro per la celebrazione dell’Eucaristia. In verità oggi l’Ordine Francescano ha due occasioni differenti per festeggiare. La prima è la festa di San Bonaventura, Vescovo, Dottore della Chiesa ed, al momento, unico Ministro Generale dei Francescani ad essere stato canonizzato. I suoi diciassette anni di governo, alla guida dell’Ordine, influirono in modo così profondo e duraturo, da essere considerato il secondo fondatore dell’Ordine dei Frati Minori. La seconda occasione, che ci riconduce qui, in Terra Santa, è la solennità della Dedicazione della Basilica del Santo Sepolcro, ossia in tale data si fa memoria di quel lontano 15 luglio del 1099, in cui gli eserciti crociati al seguito di Goffredo di Buglione, conquistarono Gerusalemme. Stingendosi attorno al Ministro Generale fra José Rodriguez Carballo, al Presidente del Capitolo, fra Francesco Bravi ed al Custode di T.S., in un unico abbraccio ideale era come se tutti i frati della Custodia fossero lì, dinanzi all’Anastasis, mentre nell’interno della Cappella dell’Angelo, alla luce tremolante delle candele Cristo compiva nuovamente il Suo miracolo, facendosi pane e vino, nella sua offerta eterna d’amore. Al termine della toccante solenne celebrazione, con l’organo dei latini che accompagnava il canto della  Missa de Angelis, tutti i capitolari sono rientrati a San Salvatore per un incontro finale e la chiusura ufficiale del Capitolo. Il Presidente, fra Francesco, ringraziando tutti per il lavoro svolto, ha sapientemente ripercorso il Capitolo nei suoi momenti salienti, ricordando, tra l’altro, quanto, il Patriarca ed il Nunzio, mediante le loro riflessioni abbiano offerto ai capitolari degli spunti di riflessione e verifica e quanto significativa sia la decisione della ripresa del processo di canonizzazione dei Beati martiri della Custodia e l’introduzione della causa di beatificazione di Gianbattista D’Amanti, rappresentino uno stimolo a qualificare il cammino, come rinnovamento della nostra vita, la chiamata alla santità. Il Custode, fra Pierbattista, ha indirizzato a tutti i presenti una parola molto toccante, collegando la missione dei frati della Terra Santa ed il loro silenzioso servizio, direttamente al progetto divino d’amore di Dio. Non siamo soli, ha detto il Custode, la Provvidenza è con noi, la Chiesa è con noi, l’Ordine è con noi, i tanti pellegrini ed il popolo di Gerusalemme sono con noi e questo è un segno dell’unità e del legame imprescindibile che ci lega con il mondo. Forse siamo l’anello di congiunzione, con il mondo intero, la bellezza e la grandezza di questa missione, forse è proprio questa, unire la Chiesa Universale, con la Chiesa particolare. Infine, il Ministro Generale, prendendo la parola, ha parlato con accenti emozionati di questa Terra da Lui tanto amata, ha avuto parole di incoraggiamento, sostegno e vicinanza per tutti i fratelli della Custodia, ricordando che, sì il Capitolo oggi è terminato, ma il vero Capitolo è esattamente quello che oggi comincia con il nostro quotidiano ed ha esortato tutti i presenti a trasformare in vita vissuta gli impegni assunti. Al termine della preghiera conclusiva e dopo la foto di rito, tutti i capitolari si sono recati alla benedizione degli antichi e restaurati locali della foresteria del convento di San Salvatore. Locali che occupano parte delle aree più antiche del convento, sin da quando, nel XVI secolo, prima di essere acquistati dai Francescani cacciati dal Santo Cenacolo, erano un monastero siriaco. Un pranzo fraterno e gioioso ha salutato la fine dei lavori capitolari e i vari fratelli, provenienti da tanti e differenti luoghi, hanno fatto ritorno a casa, portando nel cuore la certezza di quanto grande e meraviglioso sia l’amore di Dio per i suoi figli dilettissimi.

Report of the eleventh day of the Chapter: Thursday 15^th of July

The Chapter is officially finished.

This morning all the Chapter members gathered together in the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate the Eucharist for two special occasions that are particularly important for the Order of Friars Minor. Today was the feast of St. Bonaventure, Bishop and Doctor of the Church and to date the only Minister General of the Franciscans to be canonized. He led the Order for seventeen years and so great and lasting is his influence that he is often considered the second founder of the Order of Friars Minor.

Today was also the Solemnity of the Dedication of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, which is the reason why we are here in the Holy Land. We remember the 15^th of July 1099 when Godfrey of Bouillon led the crusader army in the conquest of Jerusalem.

Gathered around the General Minister Fr. José Rodríguez Carballo, the Chapter President, Fr. Francesco Bravi and the Custos of the Holy Land Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, it seemed as though all the friars of the Custody were there before the Anastasis. Inside the Chapel of the Angel, with the flickering light of the candles, Christ once again performed the miracle of making the bread and wine into His body and blood, His eternal offering of love.

The solemn celebration was a touching event and concluded with the organ accompaniment of the Missa de Angelis, while the Chapter Fathers returned to St. Savior’s for the final meeting and the official conclusion of the Chapter. The President, Bro. Francesco, thanked all the participants and summarized the Chapter proceedings. He gave special mention to the visits of the Patriarch and Nuncio, who through their words of encouragement offered food for thought and verification. He emphasized the significance of the decision to resume the process of canonization of the Blessed Martyrs of the Custody and the introduction of the cause of beatification of Gianbattista D’Amanti, which represents a stimulus for us to qualify our journey of continually renewing our lives and of living the call to holiness. The Custos, Bro. Pierbattista, gave a very touching speech and linked the mission and the silent service of the friars of the Holy Land directly to the divine plan of the love of God. He highlighted the fact that we are not alone: Providence is with us, the Church is with us, the Order is with us, the pilgrims and the people of Jerusalem are with us and this is a true sign of unity and the close connection that ties us to the world. Perhaps we are the link with the world that is the beauty and greatness of this mission; perhaps it is this, to unite the Universal Church with the particular Church.

At the end, the Minister General addressed the assembly and spoke from the great love that he holds in his heart for this Land. He gave words of encouragement, support and friendship to all the brothers of the Custody, pointing out that even though the Chapter is now finished, the real Chapter is what begins today in our daily lives and he urged all present to be courageous in living fully the commitments taken. After the final prayer and the group photograph, the Chapter Fathers went to the blessing of the ancient and restored guest rooms in the monastery of St. Savior’s. This area is part of the oldest in the monastery. It was formerly a Syrian monastery, before being purchased by the Franciscans in the sixteenth century, after having been cast out from the Cenacle. A fraternal lunch marked the end of the Chapter and with it the departure of some of the brothers, who left for home with the certainty in their hearts of God's great and wonderful love for His beloved children.
